Where grain used to be stored, a Swiss adventure farm in the canton of Schaffhausen offers unusual overnight accommodation with a special attraction.

Two converted silos on a meadow above Lake Constance can each accommodate two people. The cosy sleeping places on a retracted wooden gallery in the upper area of the 4.50-metre-high attic are accessible via a ladder staircase. In dry weather, the skylight remains open for a romantic night outdoors. 

The round shape of the former silo promises romantic togetherness. Although the windowless depot does not at first give the impression of cosy accommodation, the unexpected inner life holds an original cuddling nest for stargazers in love. On the upper floor there are two mattress dormitories directly under the folding roof. Below, a small'lounge' with a basket bench, shelf and folding table serves as a dressing room and storage room or as a cosy hiding place for a nightcap drink. 

In the evening guests have the choice between a delicious 3-course menu from the organic farm kitchen and a romantic picnic for two at the silo. The environmentally friendly sleeping silos for couples fit into the concept of the certified organic farm, which is also an ideal starting point for a tour of Schaffhausen and the Rhine Falls or a bicycle tour along Lake Constance. 

Agriculture has been organic for more than 20 years and, in addition to the direct marketing of milk and meat, has specialised in the cultivation of old vegetables such as spring cabbage, Chioggia beetroot, Palatinate and Küttiger carrots. In addition, adventure tourism was expanded as a further mainstay. Dairy farming plays a key role here. A herd of water buffalo and 25 organic pasture cattle populate the meadows around the farm. Popular activities include milking cows, carriage rides, sawing wood, rubber boat tours on the Rhine or adventure cheese in the copper kettle. 

However, cow riding has proven to be a unique top attraction and tourist magnet. Never has the term'cowboy' and'cowgirl' been more accurate than here. During cow trekking, cow and rider undertake an adventurous ride across meadows and fields (1,5 hours approx. 89,- EUR per cow) after a short introduction and the climbing of the'saddled' cow. 

Since the silos are not heatable, an overnight stay is recommended only in the warm summer months. In cool weather a sleeping bag should be brought along. Toilets and showers are available in the common area of the Biohof. The price includes breakfast, bed linen and towels for two persons. The guests expect freshly made beds on arrival.

Seven unusual themed rooms ranging from indoor sailing boat to improvised moon landing transport the guests of this hotel into fantastic worlds. The spectacular highlight is the mythologically inspired accommodation in a wooden cow on rails 

The model for what is certainly Belgium's most unusual hostel comes from Greek mythology. But while the Trojan horse once served as a hiding place for soldiers to conquer Troy, its wooden replica in Wallonia today only accommodates peaceful overnight guests in its belly. 

Behind the bizarre façade is a two-storey suite for up to four people. It is quite deliberate that the outer shape resembles more a cow or a bull than a horse. Livestock farming has always played an important role in Belgium, also culturally. Inside there is medieval glamour with a slight hint of Game of Thrones.

The design of this Walloon accommodation can be described as more original and strange than anything known in this direction. The adventure room in the form of a wooden cow is a reminiscence of the Trojan horse, which according to legend was used by the ancient Greeks to overcome the walls of Troy. The besiegers, hidden in the belly of the monumental wooden horse, entered the fortified city by trickery and opened the gates at night.

The unusual accommodation in the Belgian version of the'Trojan Horse' has an area of 43 m² and impresses with external dimensions of 7.50 metres in height and 10 metres in length. The building consists mainly of wood and metal, the dominant materials of the Middle Ages. No less than 12 cubic metres of wood were required for its realisation.

You wouldn't expect the luxury of a wooden bath tub here. The furniture is also made of carved wood and massive tree trunks. Wooden vines appear again and again as a continuous decorative element, which underline the rustic character of the accommodation. Alternative materials such as clay, mud, lime and straw were also used in the design of the decorative elements, whose insulating properties store the heat in winter and keep the interior cool in summer.

But it is not only environmentally friendly and traditional production techniques that make the'Trojan Horse' so fantastic. The sloping dwelling with drawbridge owes its special flair and unmistakable signature above all to the participation of local craftsmen. The result is rewarded with a pronounced sense of style and design, which ranges from unusual to surreal and alienating, without lacking comfort and elegance. 

"Tim Burton meets Salvador Dali", is a fitting guestbook entry that best describes the prevailing mood. Although the rooms demand full attention due to their ingenuity, exuberant furnishings and architectural details, there is no lack of amenities. Modern electronics ensure the comfort of the guests everywhere.

Placed on rails, the horse can be moved forward and backward by remote control, for example, which allows different perspectives of the surroundings without putting one foot out of bed. The technical equipment also includes a flat screen TV, as well as a refrigerator with minibar.

The sophisticated accommodation is designed for a maximum of four people and extends over 3 levels. A drawbridge at the rear leads to the inside of the wooden cow. The actual living room in the belly has an original double bed with carved decor. On the same floor you can take a shower or relax in the wooden bathtub with a bubble bath.

On the upper floor there is another sleeping area with a bunk bed for two persons, a kitchenette and a living room with antique furniture, which give the interior a medieval character.

Even the head is walkable. From here you can observe the surrounding nature with the help of a telescope. The morning breakfast basket can be pulled up from the private balcony using a pulley. For safety reasons, access to the accommodation is not permitted for children under 4 years of age.

Das Vorbild für die mit Sicherheit ungewöhnlichste Herberge Belgiens stammt aus der griechischen Mythologie. Doch während das Trojanische Pferd einst als Versteck für Soldaten diente, um Troja zu bezwingen, beherbergt sein hölzerner Nachbau in der Wallonie heute ausschließlich friedliche Übernachtungsgäste in seinem Bauch. 

Hinter der bizarren Fassade verbirgt sich eine zweistöckige Suite für bis zu vier Personen. Dass die Außenform eher einer Kuh oder einem Stier ähnelt als einem Pferd, ist dabei durchaus beabsichtigt. Spielt doch die Viehzucht in Belgien seit jeher eine wichtige Rolle, auch kulturell. Im Inneren herrscht mittelalterlicher Glamour mit einem leichten Anflug von Game of Thrones. 

Origineller und seltsamer als alles was man bisher in dieser Richtung kannte, so lässt sich das Design dieser wallonischen Unterkunft beschreiben. Das Erlebniszimmer in Form einer hölzernen Kuh stellt eine Reminiszenz an jenes Trojanische Pferd dar, das der Sage nach von den alten Griechen benutzt wurde, um die Mauern Troja's zu überwinden. Durch eine List gelangten die im Bauch des monumentalen Holzpferdes verborgenen Belagerer in die befestigte Stadt und öffneten in der Nacht die Tore.     

Die ungewöhnliche Unterkunft in der belgischen Version vom 'Trojanischen Pferd' verfügt über eine Fläche von 43 m² und beeindruckt mit Außenmaßen von 7,50 Meter in der Höhe und 10 Meter in der Länge. Der Bau besteht vorwiegend aus Holz und Metall, den bestimmenden Werkstoffen des Mittelalters. Für seine Realisierung wurden nicht weniger als 12 Kubikmeter Holz benötigt.

Am wenigsten würde man hier sicher den Luxus eines hölzernen Badezubers vermuten. Die Möblierung besteht ebenfalls aus geschnitztem Holz und massigen Baumstämmen. Immer wieder tauchen hölzerne Weinreben als durchgängiges Dekorationselement auf, die den rustikalen Charakter der Unterkunft unterstreichen. Daneben kamen auch bei der Gestaltung der dekorativen Elemente alternative Materialien wie Lehm, Schlamm, Kalk und Stroh zum Einsatz, die durch ihre isolierenden Eigenschaften im Winter die Wärme speichern und im Sommer das Innere kühl halten.     

Aber es sind nicht nur umweltschonende und traditionelle Fertigungstechniken, die das 'Trojanische Pferd' so phantastisch machen. Vor allem der Beteiligung von lokalen Handwerkern verdankt die schräge Behausung mit Zugbrücke ihr besonderes Flair und eine unverwechselbare Handschrift. Das Ergebnis belohnt mit einem ausgeprägten Sinn für Stil und Design, der von ausgefallen bis surreal-befremdlich reicht, ohne dabei Komfort und Eleganz vermissen zu lassen.

Die raffinierte Unterkunft ist für maximal vier Personen ausgelegt und erstreckt sich auf 3 Ebenen. Über eine rückseitige Zugbrücke gelangt man ins Innere der hölzernen Kuh. Der eigentliche Wohnraum im Bauch verfügt über ein originelles Doppelbett mit geschnitzten Dekor. Auf der gleichen Etage besteht die Möglichkeit, eine Dusche zu nehmen oder bei einem Schaumbad in der Holzbadewanne ruhig zu entspannen.

Im oberen Stockwerk befindet sich eine weitere Schlafmöglichkeit mit einem Stockbett für zwei Personen, eine Kochecke und ein Wohnzimmer mit antik anmutenden Möbeln, die dem Interieur mittelalterliches Gepräge verleihen.

Selbst der Kopf ist begehbar. Von hier aus lässt sich die umliegende Natur mit Hilfe eines Teleskops beobachten. Vom privaten Balkon lässt sich der morgendliche Frühstückskorb über einen Flaschenzug hochziehen. Der Zugang zur Unterkunft ist aus Sicherheitsgründen nicht für Kinder unter 4 Jahren gestattet.

In the Cevennes National Park, on the border of Gard and Ardèche, one of the most beautiful dripstone caves in France is located. Its wealth of sparkling stalactites and stalagmites, calcite crystals and cave pearls earned the cave the nickname "Grotto of Diamonds" early on and attracts up to 120,000 visitors annually to the underground wonder world. 

The short excursion into the 60-metre-deep cave complex lasts one hour, of whose so far explored 30 kilometres of path network can be visited just 1 kilometre.

Although the cave had already fascinated geologists since the middle of the 19th century, the geological treasure was only opened to the public in 1967. Thanks above all to the work of two tireless amateur researchers, the fairytale underworld has been open to everyone for 50 years now.

For the anniversary year, those responsible for the family-run show cave have come up with a special attraction that is probably unique in the world. Where else do friends of the cultivated thrill have the opportunity to spend an exclusive night in a 35 million year old stalactite cave? And in a comfortable pyramid with transparent walls, which allows a clear view of the illuminated stalactite landscape at the cave vault. 

The 3.50 meter high pyramid construction houses a real bedroom with its own underfloor heating. On an area of 25 square metres, a comfortable double bed with duvet, pillows, bedside tables and lamps as well as an armchair are available to privileged guests. The temporary accommodation is also equipped with a kettle and Nespresso coffee machine, a chemical toilet and a sink with hot water.  Everything is almost as comfortable as in the hotel, only without TV, shower or internet. But with a romantic gourmet dinner and breakfast in the gastro basket of the caterer! 

Out of consideration for the special environment and the fragile dripstone structures, only environmentally friendly materials and innovative technologies were considered for the construction of the underground pyramid. Under the direction of experts, an impressive installation was created for which neither concrete nor cement was required. In order to keep the environmental impact as low as possible, the entire stainless steel construction had to be dismountable and recyclable. The floor therefore rests on steel pots, while atmospheric-resistant plastic was used for the transparent walls.

When choosing the pyramid shape, the architects were inspired by the structure of the rock crystal. Warm and protected from the prevailing 14°C outside temperature in the cave, the pyramid offers the ideal basis for a pleasant sleep and the best conditions for spending sixteen unforgettable hours in an extraordinary environment that has remained hidden from millions of years of human eyes. The special magic of the place is enhanced by the skilful staging of light and the appropriate background music to create a fairy-tale spectacle whose timeless fascination hardly anyone is able to escape.

Natural ventilation, fluorescent furniture and the safety requirements for an overnight stay underground required a technical masterpiece, which is naturally reflected in the price. A long night in the "Diamond Grotto" (from 6 pm to 10 am the next day) costs an impressive 1,200 euros for two people! In return, in addition to the overwhelming experience and the futuristic-looking accommodation, there is a private guided tour through the complex. In addition, qualified staff at the entrance to the cave ensures the safety of the guests, who will always find a contact person if necessary.

Only a few months remain before the cave pyramid will have disappeared at the end of the year. Afterwards, the natural wonders of the stalactite cave in the department of Ardèche will have dived into darkness again, except for a few moments during the day.
