Lighthouse Loft
Love, fire & passion is the promise of this love nest in a converted lighthouse with awesome views over the Dutch coast

Exactly 76 steps lead upwards in the lighthouse. A small paradise opens upstairs: a double bed, TV, DVD player, breakfast corner, radio and a magnificent view. For over five years, this striking building has had a new purpose as an original tower domicile for one night.

Guests from all over the world travel to the Dutch harbour town to spend a night in the lighthouse, usually for a very special reason. The spectacular panoramic view from a height of more than 20 metres is fascinating for most guests. The advance booking period is therefore more than one year!

The occasions are diverse: for a round birthday, the silver wedding, or simply because of the preference for maritime ambience. It has never been counted how many marriage proposals have been made here, but it is likely that many are inspired by the romantic view.

At the end of the nineties, a journalist had bought the old beacon and thus fulfilled a childhood dream. The panoramic view from the tower pulpit is particularly fascinating for most guests.

Dozens of steps lead up. There three very fully equipped floors crown the imposing tower. The bathroom floor with round shower is connected to the tower room, the most important living room, via a curved corridor. Here you will find a made-to-measure bed, a small sitting area and a worktop on which an extensive breakfast can be prepared.

A steep staircase leads to the pulpit with the beacon under the copper dome. From here you can enter the balcony-like gallery that surrounds the lighthouse in a wreath. The tower administration is the responsibility of a lighthouse keeper, who welcomes the guests and can be reached by telephone at any time if there are any questions or problems. In the morning, a breakfast basket with delicious contents, fresh coffee and oven-warm rolls is delivered.

After three quarters of a century of loyal service, the light of the beacon went out in 1998, showing countless ships on the North Sea the safe way to the harbour from the middle of the 18th century onwards. In the meantime, the entrance had been adapted to modern requirements, so that the flashing signal was no longer necessary at the old location. For a short time, the future of the superfluous tower seemed uncertain, for what is a disused lighthouse suitable for?

The owner, the highest road and hydraulic engineering authority in the Netherlands, finally sells the monumental building to a private person, who fulfils a long-cherished dream: a vantage, rest and sleeping place right at the top of the tower! The completely restored and chicly furnished lighthouse now serves as comfortable accommodation for a maximum of two paying guests, who stay here high above the old Hanseatic city, between the country and the mudflats. If they could get a free appointment.
